Cross Country Releases 2021 Schedule
It seemed like yesterday when the doors opened at Cherokee Bluff in 2018, but year four for the cross country program is underway with their summer training. Both the girls and boys teams have made it to state every year. Last fall the cross country teams finished strong with the boys making podium at state taking 4th as a team and the girls were just a few points from making podium, they finished 5th at state. Fourth year Head Cross Country Coach Matthew Brick states, “Going to state is now an expectation. As a team, we have to make a statement at Carrollton. We can’t go to state and settle for being there anymore. When we’re at our best, we can compete with the best.”
The Cherokee Bluff Cross Country program will kick off their season at the North Georgia Two Mile Stage Race at East Jackson High School on August 14th. “We always begin our season with a two mile race. It’s a great way to get a baseline of our fitness from the summer before we start running a 5k,” said Brick. The following weekend the team will get their feet wet with the season’s first 5k at the LCA Invite at Loganville Christian Academy. “We had this meet on our schedule last year, but we didn’t attend because the meet grew so much with meets cancelling left and right because of COVID so we did our own “meet” at the school,” sad Brick. Cherokee Bluff will kick off the month of September at the AT&T Starr’s Mill Panther Meet down in Fayetteville. Brick states, “Adison qualified last season for the Meet of Champions and ran on this course in November. The course is shaded and should run fast, even in September”. The team will take a week off before heading over the state line to The Southern Showcase at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Alabama. “This meet will be fun to watch and should be quick with some great footing. Some of the nation’s fastest distance runners ran on this course last year and the competition should be outstanding. Also, there is a college race the day before and we will have several CB alums running in it so hopefully we will be able to watch them compete”, said Brick. The Runners Fit Mountain Invite will be on October 7th at Unicoi State Park in Helen. “We didn’t run this meet last year, but this a great meet for our new ones since this is where our region meet is hosted. This meet is normally fast and is always the team’s favorite to run a PR”, said Brick. The team will take a week off before heading to the Coach Wood Invite for their last regular season meet on the other side of the state. Last season the team came back with a trophy at Coach Wood and many ran PRs on this course. The region championship will be October 28th at Unicoi State Park.
