Cross Country Releases 2020 Schedule
Year three for the cross country program looks very promising going into the fall. There have been new and familiar faces that have been running. For the ones that are logging their miles, Coach Brick has already seen an improvement. “The kids have been working hard. I feel like we are so far ahead of where we were this time last year. This team is extremely focused and our team captains have been doing a great job leading them. The month of June was the best month of training that I have seen from a group that I have coached,” said Brick.
The girl’s team are young and top returner, Adison Myers (So), looks to move up from her podium performance from state last year. “Adi has been logging her miles this summer. I believe the state meet last year was her “coming out” performance. There’s no telling what kind of track season she could’ve had if the season wasn’t shut down. Overall, our girls are training like the state meet is tomorrow, and they are running with a chip on their shoulder. We have a group of girls (Sydney Fisher (Fr), Savannah Willis (Sr), Amelia Dovie (So), Hayle Alemany (Jr), and Carson DeMars(Fr)) that are so close training right now, that I can’t tell you that order at all. I don’t have to coach packing running with them, they are doing it themselves. I have never coached a girl’s team that have gelled so quickly,” said Brick.
On the other hand the boy’s team are a little older. “Our boys are improving. We have a couple boys that are improving so much that they can literally take minutes off their 5k time if they were to run right now. This is the year that our senior boys have circled on their calendars since the school opened in 2018. Our senior guys (Rhys Baker, Kyle Boyd, Ben Casteel, John Gibson, and Matthew Taylor) are all determined to finish out their careers at Cherokee Bluff with fast times,” said Brick.
Coach Brick has been extremely proud of his freshman group. “We have a very talented group of freshman that have been running. They have already bought into “The Path To Greatness”. Sydney, Carson, Isabelle Nestor, Raygan Conolty, and Austin Click have done well as freshman coming out to practice and working hard. They all ran in middle school, so they have the experience. I look at their middle school times and I already know that they are ahead of those. Last year our girl’s team had some of the fastest freshman at the state meet, and I think we will repeat that this year. Sydney and Carson will be a surprise as freshman in AAA and have consistently ran with our top girls. Austin will be the same as well. We also have a couple new athletes that have been doing well at practice”, said Brick.
Both the girls and boys teams have made it to state every year since the school has opened. “Going to state is now an expectation. As a team, we have to make a statement at Carrollton. We can’t go to state and settle for being there”, said Brick.
The 2020 cross country schedule has been released. Brick states, “if you look at our regular season meets, besides our home dual and county, the rest of our schedule are all new meets that our team have not ran. We have some fast races in October. I thought it was important to put the Carrollton Orthopedic meet on our schedule since we have some freshman and new athletes that have not ran there, and since that’s where the state meet is held. All our freshman have ran the region course”.
The cross country teams will open their season on August 15th at the LCA Invitational on the campus of Loganville Christian Academy.
